The Corgi was bred for herding and is a working dog. It's one of the oldest breeds of dogs from the British Isles and is thought to have originated from Flemish weavers who brought their dogs to England in the 13th century. It was once believed that Queen Elizabeth was responsible for bringing these small dogs into existence, but this has not been proven.

Find out whether or not the Corgi is a good family pet if they are generally friendly with kids, if you can trust them to watch over your kids when there's no one around, and much more.

Corgi temperament

Corgis are brilliant dogs and are often used as guide dogs for the blind or deaf. They have been used for herding cattle for centuries in Wales and England, but today they are more commonly kept as companion animals. The breed was initially developed by breeding Welsh shepherds with Flemish weavers' dogs, which were brought to Britain by the Vikings. This produced a small herding dog that could efficiently work all day long without tiring out.

Corgi intelligence

During these origins, the Corgi breed is highly intelligent but also has a stubborn streak that runs through its personality. Their loyalty to their family is fierce, but they can also be jealous and territorial without enough training. Hence as with most breeds, early socialization and training are vital to help the Corgi develop into a well-behaved pet.

Is the Corgi a good family dog?

The answer is Yes! Corgis are great family dogs as long as they get plenty of attention from their owners. They need to feel loved by their humans to show their affection.
